Undergraduate Degree Requirements

*NOTE: Students on the Spring 2022 Academic Catalog or later have updated General Education requirements that are different than those listed below. Please click here to review these requirements.

All Bachelor of Arts degrees issued by the College of Humanities require the following Foundation and General Education requirements in addition to major requirements (Note: Students who are enrolled in the Honors Colleges should consult with their Academic Advisor to review additional options for completing General Education requirements):

  • Foundation Composition courses*
  • General Strand Math Course*
  • Proficiency in a Second Language**
  • 2 Tier I Traditions & Cultures courses
  • 2 Tier I Individuals & Societies courses
  • 2 Tier I Natural Science courses***
  • 1 Tier II Arts course
  • 1 Tier II Individuals & Societies course
  • 1 Tier II Natural Science Course***
  • Diversity Emphasis Course****

*Consult with your advisor  for available course options and/or course sequences.

**Second-semester proficiency in a second language is required for the Bachelor of General Studies degree. Fourth-semester proficiency in a second language is required for all other degrees in the College of Humanities.

***Students completing a second degree that requires higher-level science coursework should consult with their Academic Advisor to determine whether these can fulfill Tier I Natural Science requirements.

****Courses designated as fulfilling the Diversity Emphasis requirement may also fulfill another eligible requirement in a student’s degree program.

In addition to the above requirements, all students pursuing a degree issued by the College of Humanities are required to complete a minor. Exceptions to this policy are those students pursuing a Bachelor of General Studies degree, or who are completing a second major with a Bachelor of Arts designation as described below.

Finally, all degrees issued by the College of Humanities require a minimum of 120 total units, of which at least 42 units must be upper-division (i.e., at the 300- or 400-level).

Dual Major Requirements

Students pursuing a second major with a Bachelor of Arts designation need only complete the Foundation and General Education requirements associated with their primary degree program. In addition, a minor is not required for students with a second major with a Bachelor of Arts designation.

Dual Degree Requirements

Students pursuing a second degree that has a different degree designation than the Bachelor of Arts (e.g., Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, etc.) should consult with Academic Advisors in both degree programs to confirm completion of Foundation and General Education requirements for each degree. In addition, a minor is required in conjunction with the Bachelor of Arts degree issued by the College of Humanities. However, it may be possible for students to add a minor related to the other degree to satisfy this requirement. Students are asked to consult with Academic Advisors in each program to verify options to satisfy this requirement.
