Placement vs Proficiency

The online placement exam is typically accessed via Next Steps Center and may only be used to determine the level of language coursework in which a student should begin at the UA. The online placement exam may not be used to satisfy the proficiency requirement in a student’s degree program.

The Proctored Language Proficiency Exam, available through the College of Humanities, will determine a) a student’s level of proficiency in the language; and b) the level of language coursework in which a student may begin at the UA. Only the Proctored Language Proficiency Exam may be used to satisfy the proficiency requirement in a student’s degree program provided the result meets or exceeds the required level of proficiency. If a student has met their required level of second language proficiency via this exam, then this will automatically be noted on the student’s Advisement Report.

Scheduling the Exam

The online placement exam may only be completed by incoming students via the Next Steps Center.

The Proctored Language Proficiency Exam is proctored online through Brightspace and Honorlock, you can register online.

Proctored Proficiency exams for Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Korean are done once at the beginning of Fall and Spring Semesters:

LPPE Scores Posting to Student Accounts

When students take the exam outside of their freshmen year, the exam scores have an additional step before they fully post to student accounts. While the test result will show up on the transfer credit report 24-48 hours after they take the exam, it may show as "rejected" up to 7 days after the student takes the exam. Processing the scores is a manual step, and sometimes it takes several days to get records fully posted especially during high-volume times such as orientation or at the end of semesters when course registration opens.

Students are notified that it takes several days to process their scores when they complete the test and in the confirmation email they receive. If it has been more than 7 days since they have taken the exam and a student's score is still showing as "rejected", please use the LPPE Support Request form.
